US Pauses Shipment of Bombs to Israel While Funneling in Billions More Funding

by Farrukh Abadi

Last week, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced at a Senate subcommittee hearing that the US was pausing one shipment of 3,500 bombs to Israel “in the context of unfolding events in Rafah.” Earlier in the week, Israel had begun an intense aerial attack and ground invasion of eastern Rafah, the southern city of Gaza where roughly 1.4 million Palestinians are sheltering from Israel’s continued genocide.

When questioned about the decision to pause one arms shipment, Austin began by stating: “First of all, our commitment to Israel’s security is ironclad. As you’ve seen from the very beginning, we’ve flowed billions of dollars of security assistance at a very rapid pace into Israel, and… with your help, we’re grateful for this, we just passed the largest ever supplemental appropriation.”

Austin also clarified that the US government had not yet made any final decisions on stopping the flow of military “aid” to Israel, but rather that they were just pausing one shipment of bombs to ensure the US is “providing the right kinds of weaponry” to Israel.

Senator Lindsey Graham argued that the US should give Israel weapons without restraint and implied that Israel should utilize nuclear weapons on Palestine, stating: “this is Hiroshima and Nagasaki on steroids.”

Although US pauses on “aid” to Israel are relatively rare, they have occurred on several occasions in the past when Israel did not comply with US dictates. Former US Presidents Eisenhower, Ford, Reagan, and George H.W. Bush all have either delayed or withheld “aid” to Israel.

Other US officials have also pointed out the insignificance of the pause. Prior to Austin’s public statement, National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby stated “All I can tell you is that… our support for Israel’s security remains ironclad. And I’m not going to get into the specifics of one shipment over another.”

During the Senate hearing, Austin himself emphasized that only one shipment of weapons was under scrutiny. This means that the $26 billion “aid” bill for Israel passed last month, as well as the $827 million in military “aid” that Biden recently authorized are both moving ahead untouched.

Since October 7, Biden has reportedly made over 100 military “aid” transfers to Israel.

A recent report from the Biden administration investigating whether Israel has violated US or international law using US weapons concluded that Israel has used weapons “inconsistent” with international law but that the US cannot identify any specific instances of this and therefore will continue to supply Israel with arms.

HOPE AMIDST TOTAL DESTRUCTION

I find it very difficult to share in the optimism displayed by the organizations at this meeting, but they're conducting the fight and not me, so who am I to say ? I do want them to be right .

PFLP on ‘the inevitable, imminent and decisive victory’

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) Deputy Secretary-General Jamil Mezher delivered the following speech May 10 at the opening session of the Palestine session of the Maghreb-Mashreq Social Forum in Tunis, Tunisia. The event was organized by Tunisian organizations, featuring leaders from Hamas, PFLP and Palestinian Islamic Jihad. (Bold in original)

The Palestinian resistance in Gaza, with its various military wings, is engaging in the greatest epic of this modern era. Despite its modest means, its joint operations in the field and surprise tactics have managed to defeat the strongest military force in the region, heavily armed with all types of American-made weapons, and permanently undermine its deterrence and military superiority.

The zionist entity has failed in marketing its colonial project and its claim as the only democratic state in the East, revealing its racist identity and ugly face to the entire world during the eight months of the Al-Aqsa Flood battle. We witnessed the victory of the Palestinian rights, the historical narrative and the legitimacy of our resistance.

The events of the battle of Al-Aqsa Flood expanded the circle of supporters for the Palestinian cause globally. Who would have expected the world to rise up, even from within the regions most controlled by the zionist lobby, especially in Western countries and particularly in America?

The university intifada in America has struck a nerve with the zionist lobby there. Now, the world is aligning with our people’s cause in ongoing advocacy campaigns and isolating the aggression of the occupation.

The achievements of the international popular boycott movement on economic, cultural, academic and political levels have been notable with the university uprisings being a significant highlight.

The expanding isolation of the enemy, even among Jewish organizations in the United States, which have started to denounce the occupation’s crimes and disavow their relationship with the zionist entity, is notable. For the first time, the occupation’s crimes are being prosecuted in the International Court of Justice, with occupation leaders facing arrest and trial as war criminals.

The Al-Aqsa Flood battle revealed the retreat of the American project in the region and its inability to justify its presence or protect the zionist entity.

The battle of Al-Aqsa Flood witnessed the emergence of significant regional powers such as Iran, playing a pivotal and main role as the spearhead of the Axis of Resistance, and Yemen’s emergence as a new Arab military and political power worthy of pride, along with the successful resistance in Lebanon which inflicted heavy military blows on the enemy in the north.

These transformations in public opinion that have taken place and are taking place are a result of our people’s resilient resistance and the support of the free people of the world for our just national cause. The resistance, especially in the Al-Aqsa Flood battle, has been a primary lever for these changes, broadening the extent of official and public international support for our national struggle and rights.

The zionist project is a colonial, religiously and ideologically racist, expansionist, settler-colonial project based on uprooting and massacres, dominated by a group of myths and imagined superstitions based on biblical ideas that were the pivot of the zionist project and a justification for committing massacres and controlling all of Palestine.

Today’s devastating zionist war on the Palestinian people is a true embodiment of the zionist strategy based on displacing the original inhabitants and emptying the land of its people through massacres, destruction and forced displacement. On this basis, the occupation has practiced policies of geographic, political and economic separation and deprivation of infrastructure and imposed a scorched earth policy.

The true face of the zionist entity’s racism and its false democratic facade have been exposed, as well as the ugly face of the criminal imperialism that partners in aggression, supporting the zionist entity with all types of weapons and even political protection. This U.S. administration has used its veto power four times to block any cessation of the aggression.

There is a need to Arabize the Palestinian issue through the revival of the Arab nationalist project according to a progressive revolutionary Arab national program in a modern revolutionary form, shedding old ideas, freeing it from the calcification in its organizational and administrative structures. This would restore the role of the progressive Arab national liberation movement, based on a progressive revolutionary Arab national program of resistance and building its strong organizational tool, through which young blood is injected into its body.

All participants in this forum must contribute to the efforts to internationalize the Palestinian cause with new and effective ideas based on the achievements made on the ground during the Al-Aqsa Flood battle and the exposure of the zionist project.

There is a need to build a strong will to confront normalization and the Abraham Accords, through a robust Arab plan aimed at overthrowing this dangerous, treacherous project that seeks to integrate this entity into the Arab region, to continue the schemes of fragmenting the Arab nation and any attempts at resurgence.

There is a need to restore the national dimension to the Palestinian struggle and provide a strong Arab popular support for our people’s resistance. This is a shared responsibility that rests primarily on the national and Arab popular forces, to not  succumb to the pressures exerted by the reactionary forces influential in the decision-making institutions of the Arab world.

The Arab masses must continue to pressure through mass public demonstrations in capitals, cities and squares of the world in support of the Palestinian cause, supporting our resistance and condemning the ongoing aggression.

The university intifada in America and their expansion to universities in Western countries should be a model to be emulated in order to triumph for Palestine and its people.

The Arab masses must not leave the squares, and the Arab universities and all cells of Arab society should rise up for Palestine.

There is also a need to lead dialogue and build relations with Iran as an integral part of the geography and history of this region and to counter any attempts to make Iran a central enemy in order to build an Arab-zionist alliance under an American umbrella to confront it. The Al-Aqsa Flood battle has revealed who is the central enemy of the Arab nation and who is the friend.

We call for Arab progressive and popular forces to contribute to breaking the siege imposed on the Gaza Strip during and after the aggression on Gaza. This includes pressing for the opening of the Rafah crossing, rejecting its custodianship, increasing the capacity for departures and allowing the entry of relief supplies, eventually leading to a practical plan to allow the entry of Arab volunteer delegations in various specialties such as health, engineering, services and civil defense teams to help alleviate our people’s suffering, assist in retrieving bodies of martyrs and clear the rubble, among other actions, especially after the end of the aggression.

We are completely confident in the inevitable, imminent and decisive victory … and that we are in the final square of liberation. This is a firm reality that is now evident before us.

MOTHER'S DAY

At least 37 Mothers are killed every day in Gaza .

EVEN ASSHOLES ARE RIGHT SOMETIMES

As much of an asshole as Erdogan can be (  just ask the Kurdish people ) , he got this one right.

‘Making Hitler Jealous’ – Erdogan Condemns Israeli Atrocities in Gaza

By Palestine Chronicle Staff

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan commented on Sunday that the tactics used by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are so extreme that would even make Hitler jealous.

Erdogan questioned the legitimacy of Israel’s actions in Gaza over recent months during an interview with Greece’s Kathimerini newspaper.

“Is it possible to look at what Israel has inflicted on the people of Gaza for months and see it as legitimate for Israel to bomb hospitals, kill children, oppress civilians, and condemn innocent people to hunger, thirst, and lack of medicine under various excuses? What did Hitler do in the past? He oppressed and killed people in concentration camps,” the Turkish president said.

“Wasn’t Gaza turned into an open-air prison not only after Oct. 7, but also for years beforehand? Weren’t the people there condemned to limited resources for years, almost like a concentration camp? Who is responsible for the most brutal and systematic mass killings in Gaza after Oct. 7?,” Erdogan continued.

He accused Netanyahu of employing genocidal tactics that would surpass even Hitler’s envy, criticizing Israel’s military actions including targeting ambulances, attacking food distribution centers, and firing upon aid convoys.

“Netanyahu has reached a level that would make Hitler jealous with his genocidal methods. We are talking about Israel; which targets ambulances, hits food distribution points, and opens fire on aid convoys,” he said.

Cutting Ties

On May 2, Bloomberg News reported, citing two Turkish officials, that Türkiye had ceased all trade activities with Israel.

In response, Israel’s Foreign Minister criticized Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for violating agreements by obstructing ports crucial for Israeli trade.

Foreign Minister Israel Katz denounced Erdogan’s actions as dictatorial, accusing him of disregarding the interests of Turkish citizens and businesses, as well as international trade pacts.

“This is how a dictator behaves, disregarding the interests of the Turkish people and businessmen, and ignoring international trade agreements,” the minister posted on X.

Katz further stated that he has directed the foreign ministry to explore alternative trade options with Turkey, prioritizing domestic production and seeking imports from other nations.

Gaza Genocide

Currently on trial before the International Court of Justice for genocide against Palestinians, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7.

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, 34,971 Palestinians have been killed, and 78,641 wounded in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza starting on October 7.

Moreover, at least 7,000 people are unaccounted for, presumed dead under the rubble of their homes throughout the Strip.

Palestinian and international organizations say that the majority of those killed and wounded are women and children.

The Israeli war has resulted in an acute famine, mostly in northern Gaza, resulting in the death of many Palestinians, mostly children.

The Israeli aggression has also resulted in the forceful displacement of nearly two million people from all over the Gaza Strip, with the vast majority of the displaced forced into the densely crowded southern city of Rafah near the border with Egypt – in what has become Palestine’s largest mass exodus since the 1948 Nakba.

Israel says that 1,200 soldiers and civilians were killed during the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation on October 7. Israeli media published reports suggesting that many Israelis were killed on that day by ‘friendly fire’.

IT'S NOT GOING TO BE EASY AND YOU WILL DIE

The cowards of the fascist israeli army think they are going to have an easy time of attacking Rafah, but the truth is that they will fail like they and their amerikkkan allies have everywhere else. They kill babies and are called heroes . They die a coward's death and are still called heroes. Wrong.

Hamas responds to Zionist attack on Rafah crossing

Senior Hamas leader Osama Hamdan at Hamas’ press conference today, May 7, 2024, issued this statement.

In response to the zionist attack on the Rafah crossing, we call on the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation to convene an urgent meeting at the level of foreign ministers, to take an immediate and effective stance to stop this violation and compel the occupation to halt its aggression against our people and our nation.

We highly appreciate the stance of our brothers in the Arab Republic of Egypt in condemning the occupation’s bombing and occupation of the Rafah crossing, and we value their rejection of the occupation’s request to open the crossing under these conditions, insisting on the previous mechanism. We affirm that the Rafah crossing was and will remain a purely Egyptian-Palestinian passage, with no presence of any occupying force.

Netanyahu and his Nazi government must understand that the movement and the Palestinian resistance will not respond to any initiative to stop the aggression or any prisoner exchange deal under military pressure and escalation of aggression, and that these illusions will vanish into thin air.

We call on the United Nations and the international community to pressure the occupation to stop this escalation that threatens the lives of hundreds of thousands of displaced civilians in Rafah and across the Gaza Strip, as well as threatens all efforts by mediators to stop the aggression and genocide.

We assert that the military operation in Rafah, if pursued by the enemy, will not be a walk in the park for the terrorist occupation army, which will ultimately drag the tails of failure and exit humiliated as it did in all areas it entered in the Gaza Strip, where it was humiliated by the hands of the fighters of the Al-Qassam Brigades, Saraya Al-Quds, and the Palestinian resistance.

Key aid crossing into Gaza closed after rocket attack kills Israeli soldiers

Kerem Shalom crossing was closed after Hamas claimed responsibility for rocket attack, which Israel said was fired from Rafah

One of the main crossings used to deliver humanitarian aid into Gaza was closed after a rocket attack claimed by Hamas killed three soldiers, the Israeli military said, with a reprisal strike on a house in Rafah reportedly killing at least three Palestinians.

Israel’s military said 10 projectiles were launched from Rafah in southern Gaza towards the area of the Kerem Shalom crossing. The crossing was closed soon after, but other crossings remained open.

The armed wing of Hamas said it fired rockets at an Israeli army base next to the crossing, but did not confirm where it fired them from. Hamas media quoted a source close to the group as saying the commercial crossing was not the target. Israel’s military said it believed Hamas was targeting soldiers massed on the Gaza border in preparation for a possible Rafah invasion.

More than a million Palestinians are sheltering in Rafah, near the border with Egypt.

Shortly after the Hamas attack, an Israeli airstrike hit a house in Rafah, killing three people and wounding several others, Palestinian medics said. The Israeli military confirmed the counter-strike, saying it struck the launcher from which the Hamas projectiles were fired as well as a nearby “military structure … The launches carried out by Hamas adjacent to the Rafah Crossing ... are a clear example of the terrorist organisation’s systematic exploitation of humanitarian facilities and spaces, and their continued use of the Gazan civilian population as human shields.”

Hamas denies it uses civilians as human shields.

Just before midnight, an Israeli airstrike killed nine Palestinians, including a baby, in another house in Rafah, Gaza health officials said. They said the new strike increased the death toll on Sunday to at least 19 people.

Israel has vowed to enter the southern Gaza city and flush out Hamas forces, but has faced mounting pressure to hold fire as the operation could derail fragile humanitarian efforts in Gaza and endanger many more lives.

Sunday’s attack on the crossing came as senior Israeli officials ramped up pressure on Hamas to accept recently proposed terms for a ceasefire or risk a new onslaught “in the very near future”.

Since it reopened several months ago, the Kerem Shalom crossing has been one of the key routes for bringing aid into Gaza.

The head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, Philippe Lazzarini, called for an independent investigation into the attack at the crossing. He also said Israel this week denied him entry to Gaza for a second time.

The closing of Kerem Shalom came shortly after the head of the UN World Food Programme asserted there was “full-blown famine” in devastated northern Gaza, one of the most prominent warnings yet of the toll of restrictions on aid entering the territory. It was not a formal famine declaration.
