An Illegitimate System... and the Need for Revolution

Burning Questions

The murders by police this summer of Eric Garner and Michael Brown—along with murder after murder after murder of other unarmed Black and Latino men and children during these past months—and then the exoneration of the killers are, in one horrific sense, nothing new. These monsters have been doing this for years, and for years the system has let them walk, either without a trial or just a farce of one, or—in rare, rare cases—a slap on the wrist.

But this time things changed. People in Ferguson—the everyday people in the streets—refused to follow the rules of "protest as usual" and forced the world to wake the hell up. What had been an outrage that oppressed people had been forced to learn to accept—however bitterly—and that other people had learned to ignore or shrug off, became intolerable.

The actions of those standing up—beginning in the hard streets of Ferguson but spreading to all parts of the country and then the world, and to all walks of life—have forced everyone in this country to confront the reality of the epidemic of police brutality and murder, of mass incarceration, of the criminalization of entire peoples. More than that: These actions have begun to compel people to confront what Bob Avakian has called the "simple and basic truth" that "There would be no United States as we now know it today without slavery," and that the legacy of this slavery has continued—and morphed into new forms of white supremacy, still central to this society.

All this raises serious questions.

First: What legitimacy does a system have which not only generates crime after crime from those in authority, but exonerates the culprits? What legitimacy does a system have whose laws and rules have functioned for centuries to repress and condemn and murder entire peoples? What legitimacy does a system have which offers no future for millions of Black and Latino and Native American youths, and then pens them in, locks them down and kills them off? What legitimacy does a system have whose laws and rules have functioned to exploit and plunder and rape and rob, not only here but worldwide, not only in some so-called "isolated instances" but against millions and tens of millions and, yes, hundreds of millions? And what legitimacy does a system have which not only does all this, but all the while continues to hurtle humanity into nightmare ecological disaster and possible planetary suicide?

None whatsoever.

What must be done to a system so illegitimate, so bankrupt, so lacking in any humanity or justification?

We have to be real here. Reform after reform after reform has been tried for years. And the result of all this has not been a "more perfect union," but—to get right down to the essence of things—a "more perfect" machinery of exploitation, violence, and repression, and bamboozlement of the people.

No. You cannot clear away the weeds but leave the roots intact. We need revolution. We need revolution to do away with this whole system, root and branch. We need revolution to defeat and dismantle its machinery of violence and oppression which it uses to terrorize people. We need revolution to replace it with a new economic and political system that leads people to do away with exploitation and oppression and to bring into being the world that actually IS possible—a world of cooperation and true justice, where human beings can flourish.

This does NOT mean that we do not need to fight against the powers today. We cannot let them grind the people down to dust. And when people do rise up, it opens minds—as we have seen these past three months. In fact, now is the time to INTENSIFY the battle for justice. But we must wage these battles to WIN, in both senses—to actually defeat these attacks AND to do this as part of building a movement for revolution.

Could a revolution really overcome these horrors and longstanding agonies?

Yes! As we have said elsewhere, "The wretched of the earth have made revolution and started on the road to communism—first in Russia and then in China—and they achieved great things in doing so, before they were turned back by the forces of the old order. We are here to tell you that not only has this been done before, but we can do it again—and even better this time. This is the truth that is covered up and lied about, but we have the facts and the analysis to back this up—tremendous historical experience has been summed up, scientifically, and is there for us to learn from and build on." This work of scientific summation has been led by Bob Avakian and has brought forward a new synthesis of communism. This new synthesis is concentrated in theConstitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America (Draft Proposal). And this Constitution shows how we could go forward to transform everything, in unity with the people of the whole world.

But is such a revolution possible?

Again, yes! There is a strategy for this revolution, crystallized in our Party's "On the Strategy for Revolution" that shows how to go from where we are today to a time when an all-out struggle for power would be possible. The heart of this strategy is captured in the slogan Fight the Power, and Transform the People, for Revolution." Battles like those today play one part in that, raising people's understanding in society and serving to develop the organization needed to win, when the time is ripe. There is also a doctrine that could actually enable revolutionary forces to meet and defeat the powers of repression when things develop to that stage. And there is a core of leadership willing and able to take this whole process forward: the Revolutionary Communist Party, USA and its leader Bob Avakian.

If you have never heard about this, is this not the time to get into this and see what it's about? And if you are one of those who once yearned for revolution but then, one way or another, stepped back but now have awakened once again—don't you need to see if your questions have been answered?

The times are too serious—and too promising—not to.

The Cold-Blooded Police Murder of 12-Year-Old Tamir Rice

On Saturday afternoon, November 22, 12-year-old Tamir Rice was hanging out with friends around the Cudell Recreation Center, near his elementary school, in Cleveland.

He was doing something that can get you killed in AmeriKKKa—if you are Black. He was playing on a playground. Like millions of kids do all the time in yards and playgrounds, Tamir Rice was goofing around, twirling a toy gun.

Tamir Rice was Black. And now he’s dead. Another Black person murdered at the hands of the police.

What happened was caught on video. Watch it:

Based on a call to 911 that someone on the playground had a gun that was “probably fake,” a police car rolled up deep onto the playground grass and stopped right in front of Tamir Rice. Instantly, two cops jump out and one opens fire. Two seconds after police rolled up on him, Tamir Rice was shot twice in the stomach. As he lay on the ground police waited four minutes before even making any attempt to administer first aid.

As quickly as a cop stole the life of Tamir Rice, the whole damn system went into motion to justify this outrageous, blatant murder, and trying to create sympathy for the murderer – like they always do when a pig murders a Black person. The authorities claimed the cop “had no choice.” No choice! A cop HAD to blast away two seconds after arriving on a playground where a youngster was doing absolutely nothing wrong?! Can anyone imagine any other circumstances, other than a cop killing a Black person or a Latino person, where anyone could be given airtime to say they had no choice in this situation?

The police and authorities and mainstream media slandered and tried to demonize Tamir Rice, like they always do to the victims of police murders. Playing in a park with a toy gun was portrayed as a capital offense! Meanwhile Tim Loehmann—the pig who rolled up on Tamir Rice, shot him in two seconds, and didn’t even begin to administer first aid for four minutes—was portrayed as a saint. The news was filled with stories about how he “attends church, socializes with friends and is doing ‘pretty well’ in the days following the Nov. 22 shooting.”

The cold-blooded killing of Tamir outraged people and brought forth all kinds of outpourings of diverse sections of people at a moment when Cleveland is in the national spotlight because even the U.S. Department of Justice had to acknowledge 600 cases of police brutality and killing between 2010 and 2013. And it happened in the aftermath of the refusal of a grand jury in Ferguson to bring charges against the cop who murdered Michael Brown. The day after Tamir’s death 100 people, including college students and those who catch the hardest edge of police brutality from the neighborhood, came out and marched, and there was also a rally downtown. Many Black youth jumped in with “Fuck the Police” and over and over again said “That could be me!!” On Tuesday after the Ferguson decision was announced, about 300 people blocked a major highway for over an hour. “Justice for Tamir,” "Hands Up! Don’t Shoot!" and “12 years old/Don’t shoot” rang out loud and clear.

The night after Tamir Rice was killed, the police chief, Mayor, and city leaders held a “community meeting” in which they tried to reassure the more than 200 people attending that the police are their protectors, Tamir’s murder was a horrible "accident" and completely unavoidable, that Cleveland police have an excellent deadly force policy and are even being trained to understand the adolescent brain. Cleveland’s Black mayor made a big issue of introducing the new Black police chief, who offered platitudes and said the police department has handbooks for parents to teach their children how to act when approached by the police.

People WERE NOT buying it. City leaders were repeatedly interrupted by chants of “No Justice! No Peace!” Many people—Black and white residents of Tamir’s neighborhood, students from Case Western Reserve, Cleveland State, Oberlin college, activists against police brutality and a distributor of Revolution newspaper spoke bitterness and asked probing questions—many indicting the whole system.

Protests large and small have continued to speak out about the killing of Tamir. It has become a rallying cry in the fight to end police brutality and murder, especially among youth and students. At Tamir’s wake, his family distributed posters featuring his picture and “We Demand and We Will Get Justice for Tamir.” At his funeral, bundles of Carl Dix’s statement, ”Police Murder Black People All the Damn Time. Why Does This Happen and What Will It Take for This to End?” got out. His aunt told revolutionaries, “We are going to take this horrible killing on and get justice for Tamir.”

RELEVANT OR NOT?

Yesterday I read an article by some western idiot criticizing the Turkish revolutionary organization Dev Sol for being out of date, because they dare use terms like "imperialist" to describe u.s. actions all over the world, and for using "cold war rhetoric". Well, maybe he's right. Perhaps the way the yanks march all over the place telling people how to run their affairs "or else", is more outright fascist than imperialist. You can die in Guantanamo waiting to see a lawyer, or waiting for anything even resembling a trial, merely on suspicion of being a "terrorist". And as far as class war and cold war rhetoric goes, how could that not be relevant? Living conditions for the majority of the world have gotten much much worse over the last two and a half decades, the electoral system has never been more transparently useless, so the only way out for many is armed struggle. The class system is more pronounced and enforced by the workings of the system than ever. All of this shit has to go. I may not be the most die-hard supporter of this particular revolutionary group, but as far as being relevant, they are far more relevant to today's state of the world than the comfortable amerikkkan moron who sits back and criticizes them for fighting against injustice.

Close the Barn Door, Keep the Pigs Out!

On Wednesday, November 19th, the Revolutionary Student Movement—an anti-capitalist, militant student organization—carried out a protest against a Royal Canadian Mounted Police recruitment event on University of Toronto campus. The protest outside the Medical Science Building was joined by comrades from the Proletarian Feminist Front and the Proletarian Revolutionary Action Committee. Protestors handed out pamphlets to passing pedestrians and attendees of the RCMP propaganda session. The comrades led chants denouncing the RCMP’s recruitment presence on St. George Campus, and held speeches denouncing capitalism, imperialism and settler-colonialism, all of which are the foundation upon which the RCMP functions as the strong arm of the ruling class.

The University of Toronto has a long history of accommodating the recruitment efforts of the repressive state apparatus on campus. The RCMP not only holds 1-2 recruitment sessions per semester, but also participates heavily in university career fairs. Police recruitment has largely been ignored by the left in most of English Canada, with no major disruption remaining in the collective memory of the University of Toronto campus. As a result, the cops have been left to their own devices in recruiting today’s bullies into tomorrow’s pigs.

The Revolutionary Student Movement broke this dubious ceasefire by leading the first protest against the pigs’ recruitment process at the University of Toronto. This struggle built on the immense success of the Sudbury Revolutionary Student Movement’s disruption of a similar event at Laurentian University. While our comrades in Sudbury were forcibly shoved out of the pigs’ playground, they still delivered a strong blow to the recruitment event. Moreover, they remained outside the building and educated participants and witnesses as to the necessity of smashing the capitalists’ grasp on the university and reclaiming the campus for the people.

The cowardly behavior of the police was not just in Sudbury; it also reared its pathetic head at the University of Toronto, where the RCMP recruiters refused to exit through the front door where the protest was being held. Instead, the pigs remained inside the lobby for 10 minutes with no idea of what to do in response to our actions. Truly, the cops are paper tigers.

These disruptions against the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have shown that it is possible to engage in direct action against the police, even in a time where the pouting of opportunists has demobilized and confused the left. Moreover, these struggles have in fact shown the necessity of an independent and militant student movement that actively confronts the pigs who want to turn our campus and our city into their sty.

The police are the enemy. This is not because of incidental injustices within the police force itself, such as corruption or sexism within the ranks, although they may certainly exist. The police, first and foremost, are the repressive arm of the ruling class, raised against the masses of workers who toil each day for capitalist profits. The police are the enemy of the vast majority of society because of their social function within the capitalist system, as explained in the pamphlet produced by the Revolutionary Student Movement and distributed at the action:

“Like other police forces in Canada, they exist to protect capital and ensure the stable functioning of the capitalist system. If this means abusing and intimidating communities into submission, fine. If this means lying and spying, no problem. If this means beating up and arresting protesters who denounce this exploitative system, it’s all in a day’s work. We must have no illusions: if the people were to rise up against such a system, the police would be on the front lines against them, and would be happy for the overtime pay.”

Furthermore, the RCMP is an army of occupation of indigenous lands and peoples. This function continues into the present day, suspended only in Ontario, Québec and Newfoundland, where provincial police departments have taken over and put their jackboots on the necks of the indigenous people in their jurisdictions. This colonial function is horrendously illustrated in the outright neglect by the RCMP of the epidemic of missing and murdered aboriginal women, which they refuse to investigate, much less solve. And how could they? To remedy a crime of settler-colonialism requires that settler-colonialism be abolished, which in turn would require the abolition—in fact, the smashing—of the RCMP itself.

Finally, the RCMP is a domestic intelligence apparatus for political repression. Much like the FBI and NSA of the United States, the RCMP also exists to keep tabs on, disrupt and repress people and organizations who oppose the current state of affairs. If you’ve ever spoken out against imperialist war, capitalist exploitation, racist violence, or colonial occupation, the RCMP wants to know about it. And if they have their way, they will. If you’re upset about rising unemployment, growing personal debt, falling wages and failing social services, the RCMP is your enemy because they work tirelessly to protect the capitalist system, the system that causes all of these problems. They understand this fact and will do what they can to arrest, jail, frame or discredit anyone who opposes capitalism.

This is not just the legacy of the RCMP, but rather remains to this day the very purpose of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. They are here to crush all the revolutionary (even non-revolutionary) aspirations of the oppressed. It is with this understanding that the Revolutionary Student Movement says: “Close the barn door! Keep the pigs out!” We must show that the police are unwelcome on campus. In order to do so, we must take the campus out of the hands of capitalists and make it a site of class struggle!

Everybody must get out into the streets right away to declare in UNMISTAKABLE TERMS that the decision of the grand jury in Staten Island not to indict any of the cops who murdered Eric Garner is INTOLERABLE. This grand jury has allowed another murdering cop to walk free!POLICE MURDER MUST END NOW!

This decision is a huge slap in the face to everyone who has an ounce of justice in their hearts. We all saw the cops step to and harass Eric Garner because they claim he was selling loose cigarettes. We all saw them choking the life out of him as he struggled to get out the words, “I can’t breathe,” again and again. We saw them standing over his lifeless body for minutes, offering him no CPR or other emergency assistance. And we saw the cop who had administered the chokehold, a procedure banned by the NYPD, wave to the video camera as he left the scene.

Obama has told us that police having body cameras will help deal with this problem  Well, we had this police killing on video tape, and the grand jury refused to indict the killer cops. This decision is the system telling us that we didn’t see what we saw and didn’t hear what we heard; that our eyes and our ears had lied to us. They are telling us that none of these murdering cops did anything criminal. Add this to the wave of police murders that have come down over the past few months—Michael Brown, Tamir Rice, Akai Gurley, Taniesha Anderson, John Crawford, Ezell Ford and many more—and it amounts to the system telling us that their police can wantonly murder people, and nothing will be done about it. We’re back to the 1857 decision by the US Supreme Court in the Dred Scott case—that Black people have no rights that this white supremacist system is bound to respect.

Amerikkka has told us once again that its business as usual will continue to include police murder of Black people; that Black lives have no value in this society. Our very humanity cries out for us to keep on taking to the streets and disrupt business as usual as we say NO MORE to police murder.  Powerful outpourings of resistance are needed in the face of this outrageous non-indictment.

This is a critical time. The system is doubling down, giving its front line enforcers, the police, a green light to murder people and assuring them they will not be punished for their murderous deeds. We must redouble our efforts to resist the horror of police murder by continuing to pour into the streets, raising  our voices to say that police murder is unacceptable and illegitimate, and that it must STOP!

I found this one interesting because Lucky Luciano was following the real amerikkkan ethic of get over at all costs. He was in pursuit of the amerikkkan dream. Also, he worked and was friends with Jewish gangsters, at a time when the old school Sicilian mafia were virulently anti-semitic. The movie "Mobsters" captured this fairly well.



This is a brilliant, hard hitting novel about the Kurdish people and their struggle for survival against the shah and his brutal armies. Everything about this book is heavy. The fact that it was written by a woman from this region makes it all the more compelling. Read it.



I am right in the middle of this one right now. This book includes a chapter on women who have been through kkkanadian residential schools, and how that whole colonial racist system fucked them up. Excellent reading.
