‘Yemen, Yemen, make us proud!’

There have been many militant chants at the pro-Palestine solidarity demonstrations since the latest wave of Zionist genocide began after October 7, 2023. One has been, “Yemen, Yemen, make us proud; turn another ship around!” Palestinians applauded the blockade of Israeli ships carried out by the Yemeni resistance force, Ansarullah.

Now there is another reason to be proud of the people of Yemen. Ansarullah has liberated the port of Mokha, near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean. 

Control over this strategic chokepoint will give pro-Palestine and pro-Iran forces additional leverage against U.S. imperialism and Israel. Washington and the Zionist state had viewed Bab al-Mandeb as an alternative shipping route to the Strait of Hormuz, where Iran has curtailed oil shipments by and to imperialist powers and states that aid the imperialist attacks.

Flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz remains well below prewar levels. 

“As the Houthis [Ansarullah] have taken control of the Red Sea port of Mokha in Yemen, recent events increase the threat to shipping around the Bab al-Mandeb Strait,” complained ING’s Warren Patterson and Ewa Manthey. ING is a global financial institution. (CNBC, Sept. 11)

Across Yemen, people are celebrating the victory against forces allied with Saudi Arabia, which has subjected the country to over a decade of terror. Ansarullah now controls large sections of Yemen’s western coastline in addition to the port of Mokha.

A statement posted on the Instagram page of Shia Online Community reads in part: “Families, youth, and supporters gathered in mass rallies, reaffirming their backing for the leadership and pledging continued support in personnel, resources, and resolve. Prisoners were freed, territory reclaimed, and a sense of restored sovereignty filled the air.

“For years the people of Yemen have endured the weight of conflict, blockade, and foreign intervention. Tonight the celebrations reflect resilience, unity, and the belief that the land and its people will not be broken. From the squares of Sana’a to the coastal cities, the message is clear: Yemen stands firm, its fighters have advanced, and the spirit of resistance lives strong.” 

Workers World congratulates Ansarullah for this military victory. We know it did not come easily. Any victory against imperialism anywhere in the world is a boost to workers and oppressed people in the U.S. and everywhere.

We reiterate our solidarity with all anti-imperialist forces in West Asia.

Iran said its air defenses destroyed a second MQ-1 drone within 24 hours as military tensions intensified around the Strait of Hormuz.

Second MQ-1 Drone Downed in 24 Hours

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said on Tuesday that its air-defense forces intercepted and destroyed another MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz, the second such interception reported within 24 hours.

The IRGC Public Relations Office said the drone was detected and engaged during the early hours of Tuesday over the western waters of the strategic waterway.

According to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB, the operation involved a newly developed air-defense system operated by the IRGC Aerospace Force under Iran’s integrated national air-defense network.

The IRGC did not identify the drone’s operator in its initial statement or provide further details about its mission. The announcement followed Monday’s interception of another MQ-1 drone over the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran’s Mehr news agency identified Monday’s aircraft as a US MQ-1 and said it had also been destroyed using a new air-defense system integrated into the country’s broader defense network.

Al Mayadeen, citing Iranian state media, identified Tuesday’s drone as American.

IRGC Steps Up Operations around Hormuz

The two interceptions come amid increasing Iranian operations against US military activity around the Strait of Hormuz.

On September 10, the IRGC Navy announced that it had destroyed a US Saildrone Explorer unmanned surface vessel at the entrance to the strait.

According to the IRGC, the unmanned vessel was conducting a mission in the area when it was targeted.

Iran has increasingly sought to enforce its closure of Hormuz following the escalation of the war launched by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28.

The IRGC Navy also said Monday that the supertanker Algaya struck naval mines after entering what Iran designated a prohibited zone south of the strait.

“The supertanker Algaya, IMO number 9325336, which was attempting to cross the prohibited zone south of the Strait of Hormuz, exploded after striking naval mines,” the IRGC said.

The vessel caught fire following the explosion, according to the statement, which said attempts to contain the blaze had been unsuccessful. The IRGC said vessels had repeatedly been warned against using unauthorized passageways.

Iran Says Strait Will Remain Closed

The incidents come as Tehran maintains that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until conditions established by Iranian authorities are fulfilled.

An informed source cited by Iran’s Tasnim news agency said Saturday that Tehran had communicated seven conditions for reopening the waterway.

“Until these seven conditions, which have been approved by Iran’s top officials, are met, the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed,” the source said.

Iran and the US have remained at odds over navigation through Hormuz as diplomatic efforts to end the wider regional war have struggled to produce an agreement.

The US and Israel launched large-scale attacks against Iran on February 28, targeting government buildings, military installations, missile infrastructure and air-defense systems.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks against Israel and US military bases across the region.

On September 9, the 50th anniversary of the death of Chairman Mao was commemorated by many throughout the world. One such celebration took place in Shaoshan – the birthplace of Chairman Mao – where youth were seen upholding his legacy, holding up a flag reading “Chairman Mao’s later years are the most brilliant and correct new chapter of Marxism-Leninism,” and shouting slogans such as “Long live the working class, carry on Chairman Mao’s legacy, and see the revolution through to the end!”

Videos have surfaced of the social-imperialist State of China and its repressive forces attacking youth during this commemoration, targeting the previously mentioned flag, as reported by the X account of China Maoist Union:

Remembering the martyrs of the 1963 Birmingham bombing

The 63rd anniversary of the infamous Birmingham, Alabama, bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church occurs on Sept. 15. On this day in 1963, four Black girls — Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, Addie Mae Collins and Cynthia Wesley — ranging in age from 11 to 14, were murdered while participating in a Bible study class in the basement of the church. Members of the fascistic Ku Klux Klan claimed responsibility for this heinous crime, along with a stream of other bombings targeting Civil Rights Movement activists. Three of the four KKK members responsible for the bombing were convicted years later of the murders.

The event was brilliantly documented in Spike Lee’s 1997 Oscar-nominated film, “4 Little Girls,” which included moving interviews with the families of the victims.

The bombing took place less than four weeks after the historic March for Jobs and Freedom in Washington, D.C., and four months after a Children’s Crusade march that was savagely attacked in Birmingham. On May 3, 1963, 1,000 Black elementary, junior high and high school students left their classes to take part in the crusade action against segregation.

The notorious police commissioner, Bull Connor, gave orders to the racist police to unleash vicious dogs and firefighters to aim water in high-pressure fire hoses on these young people before many of them filled jail cells when they refused to end their march. This incident, which created national and international outrage, prompted Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to write his famous “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.”

This weekend marks 25 years since the destruction of the World Trade Center and an attack on the Pentagon by members of Al Qaeda, a reactionary Islamic fundamentalist jihadist group. Nearly 3,000 people died in what was a terrible slaughter of innocent people. This attack also became the pretext for bloody American wars against Iraq and Afghanistan, and military aggression throughout the Middle East—which together took the lives of over a million people.

The 9/11 attack was also used to justify a huge leap in the repressive apparatus aimed at anyone who dissented and, in particular, masses of Islamic immigrants. All this amounted to a tremendous leap toward fascist rule, and all this was supported by both major political parties. Today the U.S. is again locked in an unjust and dangerous war with Iran that is not only a living hell for the people of Iran, but threatens to break out of the bounds of the Mideast. And now the repressive moves of the Bush Regime in response to 9/11 are on steroids and being consolidated under the thoroughly fascist Trump/MAGA regime. Last month 50,000 immigrants were snatched off the streets, in court houses, airports, and their homes by masked ICE gestapo and sent to massive concentration detention camps. Protesters have been murdered by ICE, speech and dissent restricted, with the whole society moving towards consolidating a fascist America. 9/11 foreshadowed the leaps in war, repression, and fascism that have gone down since then. This is a history that underscores why only a real revolution for the emancipation of humanity can put an end to the devastation and horror that is U.S. imperialism.

Killing of Dudley George & Military’s dispossession of First Nations

31 years ago, today the Ontario Provincial Police killed Ojibway protester Dudley George. The act of colonial violence highlights one way the Canadian military has dispossessed First Nations.

During World War II 1,000 hectares of Chippewa Territory was appropriated for a Canadian Forces (CF) training ground near Sarnia, Ontario. After the Kettle and Stoney Point First Nation rejected their offer, the government expropriated the land under the War Measures Act. At the time the Crown Canada Company had a similar sized piece of land nearby, but it would have cost the military more.

As part of the expropriation, over a dozen families were forced to relocate to the Kettle Point reserve and the two bands were merged. Promised the return of their land after the war, the CF failed to follow through. After decades of protest a government committee in 1992 recommended returning the land. The military resisted. The CF’s half-century occupation of Stony Point land ultimately led to the 1995 Ipperwash Crisis in which the police killed George. The land was finally returned in 2016, but it was despoiled by the previous military activity.

The military has repeatedly expropriated reserve territory for bases. Often seized under the War Measures Act, when the CF acceded to pressure to return Indigenous land it was usually despoiled. “In Canada, the military acted like a giant, using Indian land like stepping stones across the country”, explained Brian Lloyd, a former British Army bomb-disposal expert who cleaned up Canadian sites. “You find an Indian nation, and you find range contamination.”

The naval base in Esquimalt was built on land taken from the Songhees. Established in the 1840s, it led to the “first placement of British Columbia Indians on a reserve.”

At the start of the 1900s militia units sought pieces of reserves near Kamloops, Salmon Arm and elsewhere in BC’s Okanagan for rifle ranges and military camps. CFB Chilliwack was built on land taken from the Three Sto:lo; CFB Petawawa was land from the Algonquins of Golden Lake; CFB Gagetown on Oromocto territory.

In the early 1950s thousands of square kilometres of land was taken from the Cold Lake and Canoe Lake First Nations to create the massive Primrose Lake Air Weapons Range northeast of Edmonton. DND officials were largely indifferent to the devastating impacts on their hunting, trapping and fishing. They rejected an Indian Affairs settlement proposal as “grossly excessive.” The sudden loss of the Dene people’s northern forest was “catastrophic”, resulting in crippling social ills. An inquiry into their dispossession conducted a half-century later concluded: “We do find that the creation of the Primrose Lake Air Weapons Range had such a profound impact on the community that, within one generation, a self-reliant and productive group of people became largely dependent upon welfare payments. The cumulative impact was to destroy the community as a functioning social and economic unit.”

During World War II tens, maybe hundreds, of thousands of bombs were dropped on the Yekau Lake Practice Bombing Range on the Enoch Cree Nation Reserve near Edmonton. Lied to about the scope of the shelling, a golf course and the Enoch Cree Nation Cultural Grounds had to be shuttered after an independent consultant discovered a 105-millimetre shell and 12,000 munitions sitting in and around a lakebed. The consultant concluded that as many as 200,000 munitions could be at the bottom of the lake, prompting concerns about toxic leaching.

Land returned to the Okanagan Indian Band was also contaminated with munitions. In 2016 the band, near Vernon, sued DND and the Attorney General of Canada over unexploded ordnance and used munitions on their territory. A 2011 DND report estimated 20,000 hectares of land in the area may be contaminated and stated there have been “10 confirmed UXO [Unexploded Explosive Ordnance]-related deaths” on the Okanagan practice range since WWII.

At the start of the 1900s 6,630 acres of the Tsuu T’ina Nation Reserve was taken to build CFB Calgary. Over decades it was littered with shrapnel and ammunition. When pushed to return Tsuu T’ina land the CF made a half-hearted attempt to clean up. A former British Army bomb-disposal expert who cleaned up Canadian sites, Brian Lloyd, told the New York Times: “In 1981, the military had 1,000 soldiers in here for 16 days. They certified the land free and clear of explosives, and then dumped it back on the nation. Since the military declared the land cleared, we have pulled out one million items of ordnance, expended rounds, live rounds.”

The Canadian military has repeatedly taken and despoiled indigenous land. As Mark Carney ramps up spending on the armed forces, it’s important to remember the Canadian Forces role in directly stealing First Nations land.
