AND THIS SUMS IT UP

And this sums up what I was asking in the last post :

The Islamic Revolution in Iran was primarily caused by widespread outrage over the autocratic, repressive, and Western-backed rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. This sparked a massive, cross-ideological coalition of secular liberals, leftists, and conservative religious groups, with Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini ultimately taking leadership to establish an Islamic theocracy. [1, 2, 3, 4]
The fundamental drivers of the revolution include:
  • Political Repression and Autocracy: The Shah governed as an absolute monarch, heavily suppressing political dissent and utilizing a brutal secret police force, SAVAK, to monitor, detain, and torture opponents.
  • Forced Westernization and Secularism: The Shah's rapid modernization programs, known as the "White Revolution," alienated traditionalists. His efforts to westernize Iranian society were seen by the religious clergy as a threat to Islamic values.
  • Foreign Interference: Deep historical resentment lingered over foreign meddling in Iranian affairs, particularly the 1953 CIA-assisted military coup that overthrew the democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh and reinstalled the Shah. The Shah was increasingly viewed by the populace as a puppet of the United States.
  • Economic Inequality and Corruption: Despite the immense oil wealth pouring into Iran in the 1970s, it led to hyperinflation, widening wealth gaps, and severe economic mismanagement. This caused immense hardship for the working and lower classes, which historically formed the foundation of the religious opposition. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]
As protests escalated throughout 1978, the Shah's regime collapsed. He fled the country in January 1979, paving the way for Ayatollah Khomeini to return from exile and secure ultimate power via a national referendum, transforming the country into an Islamic Republic. [1, 2, 3, 4]
