I have just given up trying to read Rabih Alameddine's novel , "An Unnecessary Woman". The protagonist in the book is so absolutely pretentious and condescending that I couldn't continue , even after getting through most of it . I thought that if I rolled my eyes one more time due to some highbrow reference to some philosopher or other writer , then I'm done . Just painful .
