China: Palestine has right to armed struggle

Senior Chinese official Ma Xinmin made a powerful statement Feb. 22 before the International Court of Justice that Palestinians have the right to engage in armed struggle, because they live under an illegal Israeli occupation.

Ma, who is director general of the department of treaty and law at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told the 15-judge panel in The Hague, Netherlands, that armed struggle differed from terrorism. “In pursuit of the right to self-determination,” said Ma, “Palestinian people’s use of force to resist foreign oppression and complete the establishment of an independent state is an inalienable right well founded in international law.” (Palestine Chronicle, Feb. 22)

Ma’s statement marked a break with China’s policy prior to Oct. 7, 2023, of normalizing economic and diplomatic ties with Israel. China’s latest statement confronted the U.S.-European Union policy of supporting Israel with military, diplomatic and economic assistance.

While avoiding any military provocation, the Chinese government and Communist Party have consistently defended Chinese sovereignty and Chinese national interests against any challenge from U.S. imperialism and its allies. Ma’s statement extends that defense in the diplomatic arena to the right of the Palestinian people to fight for self-determination.

Reflects mass worldwide support for Palestine

That China’s policy makers would make such a bold challenge illustrates the worldwide shift in popular support for Palestine and the growing mass anger against the Israeli occupation state and its imperialist enablers. It indicates that political leaders are well-aware that hundreds of millions of people around the world are pressuring political actors regarding what position they are taking to stop the genocide in Gaza.

The massive international solidarity with Palestine emboldens those in leadership or vital positions to take steps to stop the massacre of Palestinian civilians, stop the slaughter of children, stop killings that much of the world sees as genocide.

Now a representative of People’s China has said that international law is on the side of the Palestinians. That Palestine has a legitimate fight for self-determination. That Palestinians have the right to wage armed struggle.

“The struggle waged by peoples for their liberation, right to self-determination, including armed struggle against colonialism, occupation, aggression, domination against foreign forces should not be considered terror acts,” Ma said. (Palestine Chronicle, Feb. 22)

The Chinese statement not only reflects the strength of a massive worldwide movement, it adds to that strength. After all, as much production takes place in China as the next nine countries combined — including the U.S., Germany, Japan, Britain and India. That’s according to the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) in Europe.

Even if China’s actions were limited to diplomatic support, the Palestinian position would be strengthened. But the Chinese government has also announced plans to send its third shipment of material aid to Gaza.

Through much of 2023, it seemed the U.S. corporate media, including establishment media like The New York Times, went out of their way to attack some aspects of life in People’s China or policies of the Chinese Communist Party. Strangely enough, there has been no or little coverage of Ma’s statement to the court, not even an attack, as of Feb. 26.

Media based in the Middle East and South Asia, on the contrary, gave Ma’s statement full coverage.

China’s positions hold authority with many anti-imperialist and pro-socialist activists and organizations worldwide. Should this statement be publicized it can help build solidarity of communist and workers’ organizations in the imperialist countries with the organizations of different ideologies who are leading the struggle for self-determination in Palestine and in all of West Asia.

China’s leaders have aided the peoples’ struggles worldwide by taking this bold position in solidarity with the Palestinian resistance.

THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE

1. “FREE PALESTINE!” were his last words and his motivation — this must always be centered.

Aaron Bushnell’s final words, “Free Palestine!” encapsulate both his last breath and his driving force. It is imperative that this message remains at the forefront. The fact that a U.S. soldier must resort to such extreme measures to shed light on U.S. imperialism’s crimes should not be normalized. Such an act can spark mass struggle with revolutionary goals.

We owe it to Aaron Bushnell to safeguard the integrity of his message by amplifying the voices of the Palestinian resistance, who have already recognized his contribution.

More and more people will be affected by this soldier’s act. The Palestinian resistance — in all its forms and from all nations — should also be openly and vocally supported and embraced in the same way and by the same people who are now — or who will be — in awe of Aaron Bushnell’s act of resistance.

2. Give resistance fighters the same energy you’re giving Aaron Bushnell.

What Bushnell committed to — self-sacrifice for a greater cause — is what Palestinian, Arab and Islamic resistance fighters have done for decades to liberate Palestine and the world from Zionism. Palestinian resistance fighters deserve the same honor and acknowledgment as Aaron Bushnell.

Every day, resistance fighters risk their lives and die as martyrs fighting the Zionist occupation. Palestinians from the resistance selflessly confront Zionist tanks, snipers and battlefronts, facing a much better equipped army, expecting a slim chance of survival, yet doing so to defend their families, people and land.

Bushnell burned himself alive to call attention to the martyrdom and struggle of the Palestinian people. He is immortalized as a defender of humanitarian values and the plight of the oppressed Palestinian people, but let’s also recognize the martyrs who came before him. We now carry on the struggle and turn our eyes back to the resistance with renewed vigor and clarity of purpose.

3. A U.S. soldier lighting himself on fire to protest a genocide the U.S. is perpetrating is a severe blow to imperialism. 

Aaron’s Bushnell’s declaration that he “will no longer be complicit in genocide” underscores a crucial point: He wasn’t protesting “some other country’s war,” but the U.S.’s direct role in not only funding the genocide but actively orchestrating it.

Last month, it was revealed that the Biden administration sent U.S. Air Force officers to assist the Israeli Occupation Force with targeting in Gaza, directly implicating the Pentagon in the IOF’s actions. Orders for Air Force members like Bushnell to deploy to occupied Palestine were labeled “mandatory.”

By forcing Bushnell and others to participate, the U.S. military effectively killed him, redirecting his oath to “defend” towards aiding genocide. Every active duty member in the U.S. military is being forced into complicity in genocide, like the soldiers in a Nazi military. They must learn that this crime serves only the billionaire imperialist class that the Pentagon serves. The movement must explain this.

Acts of self-sacrifice often ignite greater movements that involve mass action and can directly disrupt the military killing machine. May Bushnell’s sacrifice be a call to action for more U.S. active duty personnel to reject imperialism, and may his memory and U.S. crimes haunt all who remain silent or complicit in the genocide in Gaza.

4. Aaron Bushnell made the ultimate sacrifice to combat the ultimate crime.

Self-immolation is not suicide or a manifestation of mental illness. Instead, it is a reflection of a deeply diseased society rooted in deeply flawed policies, not a reflection of an individual’s mental state. The same individuals who condone the starvation and bombing of children in Gaza seek to portray those who oppose such atrocities as mentally unstable.

Aaron Bushnell made the ultimate sacrifice to combat the ultimate crime. Contrary to the notion that mental illness implies a detachment from reality, Bushnell’s final Facebook post and its video introduction demonstrate a keen awareness of the grim realities often hidden by mainstream narratives. The weaponization of alleged mental illness is yet another deplorable tactic employed by Zionists and corporate media to perpetuate their own delusions.

We mourn the loss of Aaron Bushnell because the world cannot afford to lose such morally conscious individuals.

Aaron Bushnell, you are in the hearts of all the free people in the world.

This is a good time to remind everyone speaking on Aaron Bushnell and the ongoing genocide in Gaza that the best source for information is directly from the Palestinian resistance on the ground and from the wider camp of resistance.

Palestinian fighters watched as Israeli military helicopters landed in an area in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in northern Gaza to collect dead and wounded Israeli soldiers. 

This scene followed another intense round of fighting in the neighborhood, which Israel has been trying to capture for weeks to no avail. 

Fighting was equally difficult for Israeli troops across the Strip, 

Below are the latest statements by the two main Resistance forces in Gaza, and the Lebanese Resistance Movement Hezbollah.

The statements below were communicated via their Telegram channels and are published here in their original form.

Al-Qassam Brigades (Hamas)

“Since this morning, our fighters have been engaged in fierce battles from point-blank range with the enemy forces penetrating south of the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City.

“Al-Qassam Brigades targeted a Zionist D9 bulldozer with an Al-Yassin 105 shell, setting it on fire north of the Musab bin Omair Mosque, east of the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City.

“Al-Qassam Brigades destroy a Zionist Merkava tank with an Al-Yassin 105 shell in the vicinity of the Musalaba area in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City.

“Al-Qassam Brigades bombarded a gathering of occupation forces infiltrating the vicinity of the Al-Musallaba area in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood, east of Gaza City, with mortar shells.

“Al-Qassam fighters monitored the Black Hawk and Yas’ur aircraft transporting the deaths and injuries among enemy forces following the fierce battles in the Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City.

“Al-Qassam Brigades target a Zionist Merkava tank with an Al-Yassin 105 shell in the Al-Balad area in the city of Khan Yunis in the south of the Gaza Strip.

“Al-Qassam fighters engaged in fierce clashes behind the lines of the invading forces and vehicles between Streets 8 and 9 south of Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City.”

Al-Quds Brigades (Palestinian Islamic Jihad)

“We blew up a Zionist military vehicle with a Thaqib-barrel explosive device in the vicinity of Doula Junction south of Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City. 

“We destroyed a Zionist military vehicle with a “Thaqib” explosive device on Al-Sika Street, east of Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City.

“In a complex engineering operation, we were able to trap a Zionist force between dead and wounded in an elaborate ambush inside a building, which was booby-trapped using an unexploded F16 missile launched by the enemy towards civilian homes. Our engineers worked to activate it and detonate it with force in the vicinity of the Doula Junction, south of Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City.

“After our fighters returned from the combat areas in the axes of advance in Khan Yunis, they confirmed the execution of a number of missions:

– Our fighters bombarded a gathering of enemy soldiers in the town of Abasan Al-Kabira east of Khan Yunis with standard mortar shells.

– Our fighters engaged in fierce clashes with enemy soldiers and vehicles in the Al-Mashrou’ area west of Khan Yunis.

“We bombed a gathering of enemy soldiers around the Ali Mosque, southwest of Al-Zaytoun neighborhood in Gaza City with a barrage of 60-caliber standard mortar shells.

“We bombarded Asqalan and the settlements of the Gaza envelope with barrages of rockets in response to the crimes of the Zionist enemy against our people.”

Hezbollah

“In support of the steadfast Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip and backing their noble resistance, the Islamic Resistance executed a number of operations against the locations and deployments of the Israeli enemy army at the Lebanese-Palestinian border on Tuesday, 27-2-2024, as follows:

“- Eastern Sector:

1- At 11:35, targeting the Ruwaisat Al-Alam in the occupied Lebanese Shebaa farms with appropriate weapons.

2- At 11:35, targeting spy equipment at the Ramtha site in the occupied Lebanese Shebaa Farms with appropriate weapons, hitting it directly.

3- At 13:30, targeting a gathering of “israeli” enemy soldiers on Al-Tayhat Hill with appropriate weapons, directly hitting it.

4- At 15:18, targeting the Al-Marj site with missile weapons, hitting it directly.

“- Western Sector:

1- At 8:00, targeting the Meron air control base in Jabal al-Jarmaq with a large missile attack from several launchers, as a response to the “israeli” aggression in the vicinity of the city of Baalbek in the Bekaa.

2- At 15:45, targeting the Meron Air Command, Control and Surveillance Base for the second time with a batch of anti-armor missiles, which led to the damage and complete destruction of part of its technical and espionage equipment, as a response to the “israeli” attacks on villages and southern regions.

3- At 16:45, targeting the headquarters of the 146th Division in Jaatoun with dozens of Katyusha rockets and causing direct hits, as a response to the Israeli attacks on southern villages and areas.”

 Today I read that there have been ongoing protests in tel aviv against netanyahu. I'm curious as to why, since the population seems fine with the genocide being committed, and actively encourage it. • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will attack Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians are sheltering, but the assault “will be delayed somewhat” if a captives deal is reached.
• The UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, says the last time it was able to deliver food to northern Gaza was on January 23, renewing calls for the international community to allow more aid to the Palestinian territory to avert famine.
• The Gaza Health Ministry warns of a catastrophic situation “beyond description” as hospitals in the north of the enclave run out of fuel, putting the lives of patients at risk.
• A two-month-old Palestinian baby has died from starvation in northern Gaza, according to media reports, as Israel is accused of using starvation as a weapon of war.
• At least 29,692 Palestinians have been killed and 69,879 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 7. The revised death toll in Israel from the October 7 attacks stands at 1,139.

Russian forces have accidentally shot down their own £275 million spy plane over occupied Ukraine, pro-Kremlin military bloggers have said.

Vladimir Romanov said that the Beriev A-50 Soviet-built plane crashed near the Sea of Azov after it was hit by a missile fired from Mariupol, the Ukrainian city that Russian forces captured in 2022.

“The enemy has nothing to do with it again. The launches were from the Mariupol area,” he told his 140,000 followers. “After being hit by an air defence missile (not fired by the enemy), the A-50 broke into two parts.”

Mr Romanov also uploaded two videos of the alleged shooting down of the A-50. The first video shows air defence missiles targeting a plane and the second of the alleged crash site with a woman commentator describing a “huge explosion”.

This is the second A-50 spy plane that Russia has lost in the space of just over a month. In January, Ukraine said that it had shot down an A-50 over the Sea of Azov.

Although Ukrainian commanders claimed that their forces had shot down the A-50 on Friday evening, Fighterbomber, another Russian Telegram channel with close ties to Russia’s air force, said that it was too far from the frontline to have been struck by Ukrainian air defences.

“It’s not possible to say at the moment who shot it down,” he said. “But this is 256km (159 miles) from the frontline…”

The Russian ministry of defence has not yet commented on the incident.

Russia’s A-50 planes are the size of a transport plane and have a crew of 15. They carry a massive fixed radar on the top of their fuselage and are considered vital for giving military commanders visibility over the battlefield.

Russia allegedly only started the war with nine A-50s and reportedly isn’t able to manufacture any more.

Russia’s well-connected military bloggers have often criticised Russian military commanders and leaked information that has embarrassed the Kremlin.

This week, a Russian military blogger reportedly shot himself after being forced to delete posts revealing that 17,000 Russian soldiers had been killed in the capture of Avdiivka, a statement that had angered the Russian ministry of defence.

THERE IS ONLY ONE CHOICE

Palestinian Operation in West Bank – Several Israeli Soldiers Killed, Wounded

An Israeli soldier was killed and eight others were injured on Thursday in a shooting operation near the illegal Israeli settlement of Ma’ale Adumim, east of occupied Jerusalem.

The Israeli police said that the Palestinian fighters who carried out the operation were killed. 

The Israeli Internal Security Service (Shin Bet), identified the Palestinians as the two brothers Muhammad and Kazem Zawahra – from the village of Al-Taamra – and Ahmed Al-Wahsh from Zaatara, near Bethlehem.

Al-Jazeera correspondent Walid Al-Omari reported, citing Israeli sources, that Palestinian gunmen opened fire at an Israeli military checkpoint near the village of Al-Za’im, east of occupied Jerusalem.

Israeli occupation forces sent large reinforcements to the area and closed the roads there.

According to Israeli Channel 13, one of the attackers deliberately crashed into a car to cause an accident, resulting in a traffic jam. Then, three fighters got out and opened fire on the vehicles with two M-16 rifles and a pistol, killing and injuring soldiers. 

The Ma’ale Adumim municipality called on Israeli settlers to remain in their homes,

The shooting at the military checkpoint near Ma’ale Adumim came days after a similar operation that took place in the Kiryat Malachi settlement, east of Ashdod, which resulted in the killing of two Israelis.

‘Heroic Operation’

The Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas described the operation as “heroic”, considering it as a natural response to Israeli massacres and ongoing mass crimes in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

“The occupation’s incursion into Jerusalem and its planning to prevent worshippers from reaching Al-Aqsa Mosque during Ramadan will not bring it security,” Hamas said in a statement. 

According to Gaza’s Ministry of Health, 29,410 Palestinians have been killed, and 69,465 wounded in Israel’s ongoing genocide in Gaza starting on October 7.

Moreover, at least 7,000 people are unaccounted for, presumed dead under the rubble of their homes throughout the Strip. 

Palestinian and international organizations say that the majority of those killed and wounded are women and children.

Israel says that 1,200 soldiers and civilians were killed during the Al-Aqsa Flood Operation on October 7. 

More Weapons

Far-right Israeli Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir said that Israeli citizens will continue to receive weapons from the government. 

Ben-Gvir called for restricting Palestinians’ freedom of movement and placing yet more barriers.

“The right to life for Jewish residents in the West Bank is more important than the freedom of movement for residents of the Palestinian Authority,” Ben-Gvir said, according to the Times of Israel. 

Another far-right politician, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich demanded the approval of a plan for thousands of new housing units in Ma’ale Adumim and nearby illegal settlements in response to the Palestinian operation.

“The serious attack on Ma’ale Adumim must have a decisive security response but also an answer from the settlements,” he wrote on X.

“I demand the prime minister (Benjamin Netanyahu) approve the convening of the higher planning council and immediately approve plans for thousands of housing units in Ma’ale Adumim and the entire region,” he continued.

In parallel with the war in the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army escalated its incursions into cities, towns and refugee camps in the West Bank, killing hundreds and arresting over 7,000 civilians.
