PATRIOT

Are we supposed to accept that this fucking piece of lowlife shit deserves lenient treatment because of his "service to our country"? Do you actually think he didn't do anything to children in Afghanistan, Somalia , or any other place he was sent to ? Fuck his ptsd defence .
Him , his lawyer, the mother of the victim , and the fucking judge should never be allowed to see natural light again as long as they live out their miserable existence .

No jail time for man guilty of possessing child pornography

A former member of Canada’s military who encouraged his partner to send him sexually explicit photos of her five-year-old son and fantasized about how they would sexually exploit the child will be allowed to serve an 18-month jail sentence in the community.
The 60-year-old man, whose name is not being published to protect the identity of his victim, pleaded guilty to possessing 881 child pornography images between February and April 2017. He will spend the first 12 months of his conditional sentence under house arrest with strict conditions. At the end of his sentence, he will be placed on probation for two years.

Victoria provincial court Judge Mayland McKimm noted that the range of sentence for possession of child pornography is six to 10 months for people with no criminal history, except in exceptional circumstances.
In this case, the man was deployed to seven combat tours in Bosnia, Afghanistan, the Golan Heights and Somalia. After his arrest, he was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder and a serious and debilitating heart condition, which makes serving a jail sentence difficult.
“The accused suffered from PTSD as a result of his service to his country. … Those who suffer from PTSD often turn to dangerous and risk-seeking behaviours to combat the awful symptoms they suffer,” McKimm said. “I am satisfied that the accused here was seeking out this risky and deplorable sexualized behaviour to deal with his symptoms.”
These exceptional circumstances allow for a conditional sentence order, rather than a traditional period of incarceration, said the judge.
Court heard that the man was in a relationship with the mother of a five-year-old boy. However, it’s not clear how much of a relationship he had developed with the child, McKimm said.
In February 2017, when the man was deployed at sea as a member of the navy reserve, the mother, “with the encouragement and enthusiastic support” of the man, began sending sexually explicit text messages and photos.
In text conversations, the couple discussed in detail how they hoped to sexually exploit the child when the accused was back on land. They also discussed drugging the child to further their carnal interests, McKimm said.
The man also encouraged the woman to seek out young children they could victimize in the neighbourhood.
However, there was no evidence the man ever touched the child or acted out his fantasies, McKimm said.
Eight months later, the boy’s father found the images and text conversations on the man’s iPad, and called police.
In a report prepared for the court, forensic psychologist Bruce Monkhouse attributed the man’s deviant behaviour to PTSD.
“In my opinion, the accused’s long-standing use of pornography and most recently engaging in very risky and highly inappropriate sexual behaviour with his partner, may to a significant degree be due to his attempting to cope with the high levels of PTSD he is currently experiencing,” Monkhouse wrote.
McKimm noted that “the horrendous crimes” involving the child took place over a two-month period.
“We are dealing with an individual who, for a relatively brief period of time, dabbled in the dark and odious world of child pornography and pedophilia. It was not a sustained or committed sexual practice.”
McKimm found the serious aggravating factors to be the collection of child pornography, which was extensive, organized and copied, and evidence that the accused assisted in the production of child pornography. Also aggravating is the breach of trust involving the child.
“He was an active participant and party to the actions of his co-accused in the abuse of her son. He encouraged the taking of sexually explicit photographs of the child and actively encouraged her exploitation of the child in both fantasy and reality,” McKimm said.
A powerful victim impact statement from the boy’s father shows that this atrocious behaviour had real-world victims, even if the child is unaware of it, said the judge.
In mitigation, the accused entered a guilty plea, accepted responsibility and is sincerely remorseful. He has no criminal history and served his country for more than 30 years, McKimm said.
His treating psychologist believes the man can be safely managed in the community because he never had any hands-on sexual involvement with the child.
The child’s mother is still before the courts

Outrage over Trump attack: Portland movement fights back

Federal officers were deployed to “quell” Portland’s protests beginning the weekend of July 10 and continuing the following week. Camouflaged unidentified agents arrested and detained demonstrators without even a pretext. The Trump administration has escalated the confrontation between the people and the state apparatus, bringing a whiff of fascism to the city. Portland’s movement is fighting back.
Like every large city in the U.S., Portland, Ore., has seen thousands of people pouring onto the city streets, bridges and squares since the murder of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. People have protested Floyd’s murder and that of all the thousands of other primarily Black, Brown and Indigenous victims of rampant police brutality. In Portland, the protests have continued for over 50 consecutive days.
Moms Against Police Brutality hold the line against federal cops, shielding protesters outside Multnomah County Justice Center, Portland, Ore., in the early morning hours of July 20.
Across the country, this movement against racist police violence has been met with more police violence, choking city centers from coast to coast with tear gas and a wide array of so-called less-than-lethal weapons. Used improperly, as police have done on many occasions, such weapons have in fact been lethal. Tear gas itself is a chemical weapon banned in war by international law.
Ted Wheeler, Portland’s Democratic mayor, has protested Trump’s federal officers, so it might surprise people around the country that the throngs of people who Portland police have brutalized nightly loathe him. Wheeler initially agreed to limit the Portland Police Bureau’s use of tear gas, though not ban it entirely, after mass outrage over the cops’ freewheeling assault with the chemical weapon.
Wheeler is both the mayor and the PPB commissioner and thus has unilateral power within the City Council for PPB assignments. Portland is the last major city in the U.S. that uses the commission form of government, which blends legislative and executive authority by giving the mayor and city commissioners control over individual bureaus like the police bureau, the transportation bureau, the parks bureau, etc.
The mayor has resisted calls to hand over control of PPB to Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty and end his blatant conflict of interest. Elected in 2018, Hardesty is the first and only Black woman ever elected to the Portland City Council and is seen by many as the most sympathetic to the city’s often raucous activist community.
But the federal repressive forces were even worse than the PPB. Oregon Public Broadcasting reported on July 12 that a U.S. Marshals officer shot protester Donavan LaBella, 26, in the head with “less-than-lethal” munitions in what witnesses described as an unprovoked attack, causing facial and skull fractures that required reconstructive surgeries. LaBella remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The feds move in
Acting head of Department of Homeland Security Chad Wolf arrived in Portland July 16 on Trump’s orders to oversee the federal crackdown. Federal officers have ramped up the use of tear gas, throwing canisters of the chemical weapon into large crowds without warning, which this reporter experienced first-hand the night of July 17.
Multiple reports and video footage portray camo-clad federal officers, who lack any identifying badge numbers or name tags, grabbing people off the streets and pulling them into unmarked vans, then driving them blindfolded to an undisclosed location. Now people know this was the Hatfield Federal Courthouse, one block north of the PPB headquarters, where they were questioned and photographed.
Workers World spoke with a protester (unnamed here for his safety) on the night of July 17, who described how federal officers grabbed him off the sidewalk and shoved him into an unmarked van. He was released the following day after a night of intense questioning at the federal courthouse.
Detainees are either not told what crimes they are being charged with or are given only vague reasons for their detainment. These arrests have aroused anger and concern in Portland. Here fascist paramilitaries dressed in similar camo and gear regularly show up to demonstrations where they assault leftists and aid police.
The federal officers are blurring the lines between themselves and the fascist paramilitaries. Many people suspect that some U.S. Border Patrol officers are involved in these abductions. The Border Patrol has enhanced authority within 100 miles from any coast or border, and thus encompasses Portland and two-thirds of the entire U.S. population.
Local newspaper Willamette Week, after identifying license plate numbers on several vans from video footage of abductions, determined they were rented from EAN Holdings LLC, an operating subsidiary of Enterprise Holdings which owns the Enterprise, Alamo and National car rental brands. This should come as no surprise to anyone who is aware of the deep relationships between corporations and the police.
Greyhound Bus Lines, for example, has been a frequent target of protesters denouncing their collaboration with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who conduct raids on Greyhound riders.
Willamette Week reported on July 20 that over the weekend, “Viral videos and photos from Saturday night’s protest showed federal police beating a Navy veteran, Christopher David, with batons and tear gassing a crowd that included Multnomah County Commissioner Sharon Meieran.” Meieran tweeted: “Last night I was teargassed by a federal occupying force I SAW throw canisters of poison, without warning, into a nonviolent crowd, including elders, the vulnerable.”
Repression of graffiti arouses resistance
In previous weeks, crowds had dwindled to hundreds at the nightly protests. Now, the arrival of federal officers and officials has galvanized thousands of people in Portland, including many older residents. Many who don’t typically attend demonstrations are shocked and outraged at what they view as an occupation of their city by violent outside agitators — the federal agents.
Trump’s goal of quelling the protests and intimidating people into staying home has boomeranged, a predictable outcome in a city known for its large, regular protests.
To justify the extreme tactics used by federal officers — tactics that fit former dictator Pinochet’s Chile — DHS acting head Wolf released a list of the dates and locations of graffiti that protesters had painted. If the conflict were less grave, Wolf’s iron-fisted response to graffiti would be laughable. Instead, it underscores the government’s real motive: to crush an anti-racist, anti-fascist people’s movement that has swept the country like wildfire and sustained itself for over two months.
The state seeks any reason, no matter how absurd or untrue, to justify its vicious attacks against protesters. It labels anyone a terrorist or a violent anarchist for involvement in the movement, no matter how peaceful or constitutional their involvement may be.
Even Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, along with many other state and local politicians, has condemned the crackdown as a case of gross federal overreach and asked for the officers to leave. Historically, federal officers have assisted only at the request of state and local leaders. They have never before been imposed by the White House on states, as is happening now in Oregon.
It’s ironic that so-called conservatives, who often say they support states’ rights and oppose federal overreach, have remained silent.
Mayor Wheeler, who joined Gov. Brown in condemning the violent presence of federal officers, initially assured the public that the PPB, under his direct control, was not coordinating with federal officers and would not do so. Yet after several nights of protests, it has become clear that PPB officers have advanced on protesters in coordination with federal agents.
“Portland police and federal officers marched shoulder-to-shoulder Sunday morning to disperse protesters downtown,” read a July 18 article in The Oregonian, the state’s largest newspaper.  At a press conference, “Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell confirmed the two forces share real-time plans with each other.”
Deputy Chief Chris Davis revealed to state lawmakers in a legislative hearing that “a member of the Federal Protective Service is in the Portland Police command post during downtown demonstrations.”
Commissioner Hardesty issued this public statement July 18 on Twitter: “We know that Portland Police Association President Daryl Turner met with DHS Secretary Chad Wolf. We know Portland Police are collaborating with this federal occupying force.” To date, Secretary Wolf has only met with Turner and not with any city or state officials.
The federal government’s escalation occurs just months before the 2020 general election as Trump’s position in election polls plummets. Desperate to reverse his fortune, Trump and his backers, including the cops, could be using Portland to test authoritarian tactics, preparing to use them elsewhere.
It is encouraging that the first reaction from Portland was to meet the escalated repression with an escalated fight — with a “Wall of Moms” shielding the protesters at the Federal Courthouse. It’s a good beginning. The state’s repression and fascistic tactics must be met by an anti-racist, anti-fascist people’s movement that will never stop pushing its demands for justice and freedom from racism, white supremacy and police brutality.

ULTIMATELY

Even though I agree that without revolution there will be no real and lasting change in society, I still think people should keep fighting even for what little reforms to the existing system that they can get .
This is an an excellent analysis .

ANOTHER LEGEND PASSES AWAY

The news about ChiPig's passing hit me fucking hard.
I think I first saw SNFU in 1987 at the FOE Hall on View Street , and they were incredible.
The mix of speed, fury , humour, and melody was mind blowing.
Chi was the ultimate frontman . Witty, charismatic, crazy energetic and intelligent always made for an unforgettable show.
Sure, he had his demons like so many gifted people who leave us far too early , but he made his mark on our music scene and will never be forgotten .
I got to see them again in San Francisco and also at Harpo's, but of course now wish I'd seen them 1000 more times.
RIP Mr.Chi.

Canadian punk legend Mr. Chi Pig dead at 57

“I’ll never forget his live performances at the Smilin’ Buddha and other Vancouver spots, his blistering energy and dope style,” said one admirer

Canada’s punk scene is mourning one of its legends with the death of legendary SNFU lead singer Mr. Chi Pig aged 57 June 16.
Kendall Stephen Chinn was an enigmatic musician and artist known for higher-than- high-octane performances with the hardcore punk band formed in 1981 in Edmonton, relocating to Vancouver in 1992.
Social media reaction to news of Chi Pig’s passing was fast.
“He was a true fucking East Van Bohemian & Punk Rock Queen in the very best sense of those words,” wrote Anna Stewart on Facebook. “I’ll never forget his live performances at the Smilin’ Buddha and other Vancouver spots, his blistering energy and dope style.”
Chinn was born in Oct. 19, 1962 to a German mother and Chinese father, both now dead. He was second youngest of 12 children.
He met brothers Marc and Brent Belke through skateboarding in Edmonton in 1981 and formed the band Live Sex Show. The short-lived group soon transformed into Society’s No Fucking Use or SNFUChinn was lyricist and a charismatic frontman, frequently incorporating mask, puppets and other props into shows. A prolific artist, he also created much cover art.
The hardcore punk band became a burgeoning skatepunk subculture mainstay.
Between 1985 and 2013, the band released eight albums as well as one live and one compilation release. Almost 30 members have come and gone through the band through the years but Chinn remained the centrepiece.
While the band’s success began to mount, Chinn began a long battle with hard drugs.
He also began open identification as a homosexual. His early life was marked with trauma and later received a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
He’d been given a month to live in late 2019, a diagnosis that shook him somewhat – but did not preclude fleeing hospital earlier this year for a run to his East Vancouver haunts.
Long-time friend Chris Walter has documented much of Canada’s punk scene in his books, including ‘SNFU . . . What No One Else Wanted to Say.’
SNFU did not seem like obvious candidates for punk rock stardom – yet by combining the flamboyant stage antics and political lyricism of singer Chi Pig with the infectious guitar attack of Marc and Brent BelkeSNFU rose up to take not just Edmonton but the entire world by storm,” reads the back cover of a re-release memorial edition due out in several weeks.
Chi Pig was not a stage presence, Walter said. Chi Pig and Chinn were one and the same.
“He was 100% Chi Pig and zero percent anyone else,” Walter said. “He just absolutely had a desire to create and an urge to create.”
But, he was happiest on stage, Walter said.
“That’s where he belonged.”

“He was a total pro.”

Walter said his friend was frequently a mystery to him and many others.
Sometimes, Walter would be observing the singer creating art. “I’d be watching him and wondering ‘where did he come up with that?' It was hard to fathom. He had an active imagination.”
And that fertile mind translated to the lyric process as well. Walter said Chinn would take fragments of ideas, concepts he’d noted in his scrapbook and create from there.

“He assembled his songs like Frankenstein’s monster,” Walter said.
It was this enigmatic presence that attracted people to the singer, Walter said.
“He’s generally just different from everyone else,” Walter said. “He’s just kind of a mystery. He was so weird, they just wanted to get to know him.”
But, woe to the fan who pushed him or invaded his personal space.
“If you pushed him too far, he’d lose it,” Walter said. “His bandmates kept overzealous fans away.”
No specific cause of death has been released. “He had a lot of medical issues,” Walter said. “It wasn’t COVID.”
He held often court at Vancouver’s Pub 340 or perhaps The Cambie Pub, liked steak tartare, loved to travel and had read chef Anthony Bourdain’s Kitchen Confidential repeatedly.
Chinn was the subject of a 2010 documentary entitled Open Your Mouth and Say...Mr. Chi Pig produced by Prairie Coast Films and directed by Sean Patrick Shaul. It featured such pink luminaries as Jello Biafra of the Dead Kennedys, Brendan Canning of Broken Social Scene and now Burnaby city councillor Joey Keithley of D.O.A.
