I have recently read two novels by women of Croatian heritage. Both books deal with the wars in the ex-yugoslavia in the '90s, and the aftermath of that.
and also,
I enjoyed both novels, but I had to put "Girl At War" down for a few days, because certain scenes I found affected me rather sharply, to the point where if I heard anyone's seemingly petty complaints about anything, I would hold them in utter contempt. That is not a healthy perspective to have at any time.
I can honestly say that "Girl At War" was more intense, at least for me. I have to recommend both of these, regardless. I will be looking for more work by these authors.
Read. Get off your fucking i phone and fucking read.
