I went to a show last night put on by Chuck of 737 Productions. The headliners were The Generators, who have been around since 1997, and have veterans of bands such as Shleprock as members. Now, the whole skinhead vibe puts me off, and even though the only person in the band who even remotely looks the part is the lead singer, they have the image and attract that type of a crowd. Not to say that the Victoria scene is sketchy, but there were enough bad experiences in town in the '80s and '90s to leave a bad taste. Even so, the crowd was great, and the band was fucking powerful. Thoughtful lyrics, and heavy delivery. I did find one of the large guitarists a little whiney, as he was frightened of the "leak in the roof", when all it was was humidity "I don't want to get ELECTROCUTED!!", and he complained about the sound, and was asking for someone to get him a glass of water. Kind of funny, really, but they played together really well. I haven't been into the real melodic stuff in quite some time, but they won me over.
The opening acts were The Poor Choices, who were excellent doing their garage punk/rock style, and The Mandlebaums, who had some sweet harmonies, but sometimes crossed the line from power pop to sounding like the guys who did the "Friends" T.V. show theme. More good than bad, though.
All in all it was a good night. I enjoy being surprised like that.
