A West Shore RCMP constable who took a paternity test to help a fellow officer avoid child-support payments has been ordered to resign following an RCMP discipline hearing last month. Dereck Reginald Carter was given a conditional discharge in 2014 after pleading guilty to fabricating evidence to obstruct the course of justice by taking a court-ordered paternity test for Gregory Doncaster, who fathered a child in an extramarital affair. At a public adjudication hearing last month, Carter was ordered to resign within 14 days and has done so, said Staff Sgt. Rob Vermeulen, the RCMP’s senior media relations officer. Carter had been suspended without pay throughout, Vermeulen said. Doncaster was sentenced to a six-month conditional jail term in July 2014. He resigned from the RCMP. Their daughter was born in July 2010, and the woman agreed to raise the child without involving Doncaster. Two years later, the woman lost her job and applied for social assistance. In May 2013, the B.C. government took steps to recover child support from Doncaster. He raised doubts about whether he was the father, so the government paid for a paternity test. After cancelling two appointments, Doncaster asked Carter to take the test for him, saying his marriage would be in jeopardy if his wife learned of the paternity allegations. Doncaster also told Carter he had a one-night stand with the woman and had no idea about the child until the child-support request, which was untrue. When the results came back negative, the woman looked at the photo attached to the test and said: “That’s not Mr. Doncaster.” Carter was an officer with the RCMP for more than five years. - See more at: http://www.timescolonist.com/news/local/west-shore-mountie-who-took-friend-s-paternity-test-resigns-1.2343061#sthash.tfNf0vj6.dpuf
