Friday night I went up to Nanaimo for Jay Flett's birthday celebration at the Cambie . This is something I never do these days, but I had the next day off from my main day job, and it was a special occasion , as I have known Mr. Flett for many years, through good times and bad. Besides, he sings for Nanaimo punk band Awkward AC , who were playing that night along with Vic locals The Skidmarxists , Vancouver's Surrounded By Idiots , The Old Limp Dicks ( who I missed ) , and of course, hometown legends The Dayglo Abortions . It was totally packed, and for the most part it was a totally fun and positive night.
I got there in time for The Skidmarxists, and they fucking tore it up. Scott H. is an amazing and talented songwriter, and I respect him immensely. It's also great to see Matt ( on bass ) back in the game, taking time out from farming to rock. Surrounded By Idiots had an energy and intensity that didn't let up, and they now share a drummer with Vancouver hardcore band Christ Air , who used to also play in The Old Derelicts with Jay . Three practice with them and he fucking nailed it. Awkward AC are one of those bands that has gotten better each time I've seen them. I picked up their LP that night ( on red vinyl ), and it doesn't disappoint. This thing fucking rocks your ass. The Dayglos were the best I've seen them in a while. Murray was totally on his game, and the energy was great again. Props to Blind Mark for blasting through sets with both The Skidmarxists and The Dayglos. They are one of the few bands that could make a singalong hit of a song like "Drugged And Driving". Fucking amazing. Thank you to all the bands for making it happen, and to Jay Flett for being the person he is.
