Sunday afternoon/evening I attended the "Celebration Of Life " of one Ryan Moist, Victoria musician with an infectious smile and attitude , despite various lifestyle choices that led him to an early passing . I don't like the term "Celebration Of Life ", as I was not in the mood to celebrate . I much prefer "Memorial Gathering" , or something more neutral like that, which could end up being the same thing anyway .
It was a full house, with so many people I hadn't seen in years, and all were touched by Ryan's attitude , sensitivity , and music.
He used to drum in a band called Laffing Stock , a local group of young men playing a more melodic style of punk. I basically watched them learn to play their instruments and become a decent band , and they developed a following and even toured a couple of times , along with their next band, Shiner.
Ryan was always down to skate, laugh, talk seriously, whatever. He had an easy air about him, and yet seemed like he was always searching for something . So many people had stories to tell at the gathering. Some funny, some serious, and some just plain heartmelting .
Like everything like this it was both sad and happy . I loved reconnecting with everyone, and it was awesome to see Sean, former singer for Shiner. It had been too long .
People always say after a thing like this that you should keep your loved ones close. Take that to heart .
