There were a couple of fine people on Saturday night who were interested in what I've been reading lately. As flattered as I am, I can only put in a disclaimer that what I like, you might think is garbage, and vice versa. That being said, here is a partial list of my latest reads, all of which I've enjoyed. Fiction, non-fiction, I read it all.....
April Fool's day, by Josip Novakovich, is an amazing novel full of madness and unexpected twists and turns. It will keep you interested.
Jervey Tervalon's book about life in South Central L.A. is captivating and imaginative. Read this. You'll like it.
The People's Republic Of Kampuchea by Margaret Slocombe is a dry, textbook style read, but good for those who don't want to just go around screeching about "millions killed" without having anything to back your shit up with. She has done her research, and this book is worth looking at.
I expected more out of this one by the author of Monster, but it was okay. Whereas Monster was a work of non-fiction, based on the author's life, THUG LIFE is a novel, and just doesn't grab you in the same way. Even though I didn't love this, I'll be looking up more of his work as I can find it.
This is a phenomenal book, right up until Don Armijo gets all born again at the end. Whatever. It saved his life. Still totally worth getting into.
And this is what I'm reading right now. It's about the fucked up prison system in the u.s.a, especially the women's prison system. Cristina Rathbone went to a lot of hassle trying to get the opportunity to interview these women, and the result is heart wrenching. This book humanizes people who we usually only see as numbers, and people to be feared. Read it when you get the chance.
And of course I'm always reading
Revolution Newspaper, and
BAsics by Bob Avakian. I know, I know, I'm a brainwashed commie dupe, but what are ya gonna do? Talk to me one day and you might see that I'm not a zombie after all! Who knew? Ah, fuck ya, I got nothing to prove to anyone. Just read SOMETHING, for fuck's sake, and get off your stupid phone.
